The difference between the Ashford knitters loom and the rigid heddle looms is that the knitters loom comes to you assembled and folds for storage and transport and comes with a carry bag. The rigid heddle loom is made of sturdier timber but does not fold and requires assembly when you first receive it.
The Ashford knitters loom comes assembled and complete with a lacquered finish. The Ashford knitters loom has been designed to direct warp and the only items you need to get started are yarn and a weaving shuttle. We recommend a flat weaving shuttle to begin with. Once you get started weaving you can achieve a different finish using the wavy stick shuttle and complete your project with a fringe twister.
Another accessory to consider is a floor stand to allow you to weave where you want and not be constrained by a table. Additional reeds can also be purchased to suit different yarn sizes.
When deciding on a loom size you should consider the types of projects you want to weave, where you want to weave and how often you want to travel with your loom. The smaller looms are fantastic for making scarves, you will need a bit more width for homewares such as towels and placemats and wider again for fabric for sewing. A good point to remember is that you can weave narrower projects on a wide loom but weaving wide projects on a small loom involves some more advanced double-weave techniques.
