Frequently Asked Questions
What size Niddy Noddy do I need?
A Niddy Noddy comes in different sizes, producing yarn skeins from 30cm to a meter in length.
A small niddy noddy, just like the Ashford Sampler, is commonly used for small samples or yarn. Spinners spin a sampler length of yarn, ply it and skein it, using their niddy noddies before washing. This way they can see if the yarn is as preferred or not.
What other yarn winding tools work similar to the Niddy Noddy?
The most similar yarn winding tool to the Niddy Noddy is the Umbrella Swift. This kind of yarn winder is clamped onto the table and can easily be adjusted to hold larger lengths of yarn. However, the Umbrella Swift is not as portable as the Niddy Noddy.

How to use a Niddy Noddy?
1. Start by winding the end of the yarn around the middle part of the Niddy Noddy. You may also tie the end to one end of the crossbar. Either way works fine.
2. As you begin to wrap, hold the end of the yarn firmly in place. Take the yarn over to the left end of the top crossbar, down and under the right side of the lower crossbar, up and over the other end of the top crossbar, and then down and under the other end of the lower crossbar.
3. Return to the starting point and you will then have a completed wrap.
4. Repeat the pattern until you are finished.
