Creative Yarn Storage Ideas to Keep Your Space Organised
Keeping your yarn stash organised is more than just a practical task—it's about creating an inspiring, functional space that encourages creativity. An organised crafting space can boost productivity, reduce clutter, and make your creative process more enjoyable if you're an avid knitter, crocheter, or weaver. In this guide, we'll explore various creative yarn storage ideas to transform your space. From repurposing furniture to building your DIY storage systems, there's something here for every yarn enthusiast.
Repurposing Furniture for Yarn Storage
One of the easiest ways to organise your yarn is to give old or unused furniture a new purpose. This is eco-friendly and cost-effective, and it transforms your space into a crafting haven. Here are some storage ideas for yarn using repurposed furniture.
Wine Racks
Wine racks are surprisingly effective and stylish solutions for yarn storage. By rolling your yarn skeins into balls, you can neatly place them in the wine rack slots, keeping them visible and accessible. You can even organise your yarn by colour or size, turning this storage solution into a decorative piece. A simple yet visually pleasing idea, wine racks help you keep your yarn tidy and make your craft room prettier.
Old Crib Rails
Upcycling an old crib rail can create a unique and visually interesting yarn display. Hang skeins between the bars of the crib rail, turning an unused piece of furniture into a vertical organiser for your yarn collection. This repurposed storage not only saves space but also keeps your yarn easily accessible. If you're looking for creative yarn storage ideas, this one is perfect for those who enjoy upcycling.
Hutches and Cabinets
Vintage hutches and cabinets are ideal for those who prefer to keep their yarn neatly stored and out of sight. The shelves offer ample space to store your yarn, while drawers can hold knitting needles, hooks, or other craft supplies. Opt for a modern or antique piece, and it will not only organise your yarn but also add style to your crafting space.
DIY Yarn Storage Solutions
For those who enjoy hands-on projects, creating your own DIY yarn storage ideas can be a fun and customisable approach. These solutions are practical and tailored to your needs.
Wooden Crates
Wooden crates offer a versatile storage option that can be arranged and stacked to suit your space. Whether arranged vertically or horizontally, crates can be painted or stained to match your décor. This gives you a flexible and personalised yarn storage system. They also allow you to sort yarn by colour, size, or fibre, making it easy to find the perfect skein when inspiration strikes.
Pegboard Organisers
If you're working with limited floor space, pegboards are a brilliant option for yarn storage ideas for small spaces. Mount a pegboard on the wall and add hooks or dowels to organise your yarn skeins. This method keeps your yarn visible while freeing up your crafting table or floor. Plus, pegboards are endlessly customisable, allowing you to add baskets or bins for extra storage.
Baskets and Bins
Baskets and bins are an easy yet effective solution for yarn storage. They can be placed on shelves, tucked into corners, or even stacked for larger collections. Opt for decorative baskets that match your space's aesthetic, or use plain ones for a more minimalistic approach. This storage method keeps your yarn accessible while adding a touch of cosiness to your craft room.
Making the Most of Closet Space
Closets can be an underutilised space in your home, and they're perfect for organiser yarn storage ideas. Here are a few ways to turn your closet into a yarn storage haven.
Hanging Sweater Cubbies
Hanging sweater cubbies offer a simple and affordable way to store your yarn collection. With multiple compartments, you can organise your yarn by fibre, weight, or colour, making it easy to find precisely what you need. This method also makes excellent use of vertical space, which is ideal for small or cluttered craft areas.
Over-the-Door Organisers
Over-the-door organisers with clear pockets are an excellent space-saving option. Not only do they keep your yarn visible and easy to access, but they also make use of otherwise wasted space behind your doors. This is particularly useful for small rooms or apartments with limited floor and shelf space.
Creative Use of Containers
Repurposing everyday containers is an affordable and eco-friendly way to store your yarn. Here are a few creative yarn storage ideas using common household items.

Glass Jars and Containers
You can use glass jars or containers to store small yarn balls or leftover skeins. The transparency of glass jars allows you to easily see what's inside, turning your yarn into a colourful display. Place the jars on shelves or counters, adding a rustic, decorative touch to your space.
Coffee Cans and Other Recycled Containers
For a budget-friendly storage solution, consider repurposing coffee cans or other recyclable containers. You can paint or decorate these cans to fit your décor, giving them a new life as yarn storage. This is a great way to reduce waste while keeping your yarn neatly organised.
Stackable Storage Options
Maximising vertical space is key when organising a large yarn collection. Here are some storage ideas for yarn that allow you to stack and store with ease.
Plastic Bins and Boxes
Clear plastic bins or boxes are a practical solution for organising yarn by fibre type or colour. They can be stacked to save space, and their transparency allows you to quickly find what you need. Labelling the bins can further enhance your organisation, ensuring you can access the right yarn quickly.
Under-Bed Storage Solutions
If you're tight on space, under-bed storage is a great option. Flat bins or containers can be filled with yarn and easily slid under the bed, keeping your stash hidden yet accessible. This method is ideal for those with larger yarn collections who need to save on floor space.
Mobile Storage Solutions
For crafters who like to work in different areas of the home, mobile storage is a must. Here are some yarn storage ideas that offer flexibility and mobility.

Portable Yarn Bags
For crafters who enjoy taking their projects on the go, portable yarn bags are a fantastic solution. These bags keep your yarn neatly organised and easy to carry, ensuring that you always have the right supplies at hand, no matter where you're crafting.
Wheeled Storage Bins
Wheeled storage bins are ideal for more extensive yarn collections. They can hold significant amounts of yarn, while the wheels make it easy to move the bin between rooms. This is a great solution if you frequently change your crafting spot or need easy access to your supplies.
Craft Trolleys
Craft trolleys provide a mobile storage solution for yarn, tools, and other supplies. With multiple levels of storage, they can hold a wide variety of crafting essentials and can be wheeled around your home with ease.

Great ideas Nicky. I use large shallow plastic boxes that stack well, in or out of cupboards.
Interesting article and it provides food for thought. However, many of the ideas will expose yarns to dust, insect damage, animal hair etc. I do not use my yarns as decor items or ornaments, I prefer to keep them clean and safe. Therefore all my yarns are stored in see-through tubs on shelving. If they are pre-wrapped I usually leave them in the wrapping when I put them in a tub. This helps provide some protection, particularly for natural fibres. No system is infallible but in 40 odd years I have never had damage from moths or silverfish. There’s always a first time if course, but touch wood……
There is a downside to this and the yarn can sweat a little, so it sometimes needs to be aired. However, washing a finished article deals with this anyway.
My comments are not criticism, everyone has their own ideas about these things!
Thank you, for these very good ideas, especially the peg board organiser, the hanging sweater cubbies and over the door storage, M
