A fan stainless steel reed is used in ondulé weaving to create wavy, undulating patterns by varying the spacing of warp threads.
Fan reeds are available in two sizes: 42 cm and 62 cm.
Fan reeds can be used in many looms, but they may require modifications or specific setups to accommodate their unique movement during weaving. To our knowledge, no current handlooms incorporate a fan reed mechanism. Thus, using a fan reed requires some DIY effort from the weaver. For looms with an overhead hanging structure, the reed can be suspended by cords through the corner holes using Texsolv peg cord with pegs for attaching at the desired heights. For looms with a low castle reed height, spacers or cams for the beater would be suitable.
Fan reeds are typically constructed from stainless steel and epoxy, ensuring durability and smooth operation during weaving.
Fan reeds are usually suspended by cords, allowing vertical movement to change warp spacing; proper installation ensures smooth operation.
Fan reeds are versatile and can be used with various weave structures, including twill and lace, to create unique undulating patterns.
Regular cleaning to remove debris along with storage in a low humidity and supported environment (support is required to prevent warping over time).
Size should be in multiples of 5cm. For example, if you're looking for a 62cm reed, you'd have to choose either 60cm or 65cm.
